Local fire departments conduct regular, continuing training on their own, as seen above in a training session involving Claxton Fire Department and Hagan Fire Department volunteers at the CFD headquarters. Ogeechee Technical College's new Logistics and Public Safety Building, seen at right, provides a new venue for Fire Science courses as well as other programs.

Fire Science is one of Ogeechee Technical College’s newer programs. It is designed to prepare students for an entry-level career in municipal, industrial, state, and federal fire departments.
In addition, the Fire Science program provides learning opportunities which introduce, develop, and reinforce academic and occupational knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement.  To a great extent, the Fire Science program is best used for enhancing one’s education level and knowledge base when already employed as a firefighter.
According to OTC Fire Science instructor Merritt Kearns, while the Fire Science curriculum concentrates on improving the skills and knowledge base of current firefighters, Ogeechee Tech’s Firefighter I and II programs are entry level programs which prepare those wishing to pursue a career in fire service with basic skills needed for the job.

A shorter school year? 4-day week, 160-day year are 2 options

Options for a shorter school year would keep students in school 45 minutes to an hour longer on the days they are there. Kindergarten students in Jamie Edenfield's class at Claxton Elementary School are seen sorting colorful objects in a learning activity.

A four-day week, which would shorten the school year from 180 days to 144, is the more drastic of two possibilities that Evans County school leaders are looking at for abbreviating the 2010-’11 term.
Officials are also considering a 160-day school year, which would subtract just 20 days instead of the 36 taken away by the four-day week. The 160-day option would have students attend school from mid-August to mid-May. While the 160-day plan would add 45 minutes each day to students’ time in class, the four-day plan would add a full hour, plus an hour of planning time for teachers.
