When Socastee blanked Carolina Forest 10-0 in last year’s CNB Kickoff Classic, it seemed to set the tone for the entire football season.
The Panthers struggled to move the ball while Socastee racked up big offensive plays, a scenario that later repeated itself week after week.
Carolina Forest went on to finish 0-11 in 2008, it’s worst season in school history.
A year later, the tides certainly seem to be turning.
In the unofficial rematch Friday night, it was Carolina Forest that controlled the football while largely containing the Socastee offense.
The result? Carolina Forest defeated Socastee 10-7.
It may have been a preseason win, but it felt more like a playoff victory for the energized Panthers.
“This is the new Carolina Forest,” said Carolina Forest quarterback Marlon Horton.
“We’ve got one win under our belt,” Horton said. “Now we’re looking forward to next week.”
Horton, who threw for more than 1,706 yards in 2008, didn’t miss a beat Friday night, completing 5 of 6 passes for 69 yards.
He also rushed for 15 yards on five carries, scoring a touchdown on a 13-yard keeper halfway into the contest.
DeQuarius Wilson led in rushing and receiving, with 18 yards on the ground and two catches for 22 receiving yards.
Ronnie Moses ran for 12 yards and caught two passes for 14 yards. He also had a fumble recovery on defense.
Carolina Forest even seemed solid on special teams.
Chris Nwanewgo, called up to replace former kicker Noah Lascell, who graduated, calmly booted a 35-yard field goal at about the 12:00 mark to give Carolina Forest a 3-0 lead.
