Letter to Editor:
8/25/2009
Isakson was for it before being against it Our own Senator Johnny Isakson has authored end-of-life counseling provisions, but?before he heard of Sarah Palin’s “death panel” canard, he quickly replied that comparing such counseling to euthanasia was nuts. He then retreated rapidly when he realized that he had taken the side of the reality-based community against his Rush Limbaugh-led party. Johnny is obviously reluctant to appear rational in public! Or in the media.

Little Leaguers’ pursuit of world title takes Williamsport native home again
8/25/2009
By Randolph Murray HHJ Associate Editor
Paul Vartenisian of Warner Robins is just one of thousands of Houston Countians following every play on the baseball diamond as the Warner Robins American Little League all-stars bid to bring the world championship title home — again. But the 78-year-old retired postal worker has a unique perspective as he watches the boys of summer play their games. Vartenisian is a member of the team that won the first Little League championship in his hometown of Williamsport, Pa. That was back in 1943, when their were only a few teams, all from the Williamsport area, years before the Little League organization would grow into the vast international youth sports organization it is today.

Visiting Ike's pond
4/16/2009
While thousands of patrons were focused on golf, I took some time last week to think about fishing. In particular, I was interested in Ike's Pond-three spring-fed acres of dark water surrounded by towering pines and azaleas.

When it comes to sports, I drop the ball
4/16/2009
Each spring, the Final Four and the Masters Tournament bring joy to millions of sports fans. These events simply remind me how uncoordinated I am in basketball and golf. I'll never sink a hole-in-one or the game-winning basket in a court-long hurl as the clock runs out. I learned long ago that the only way I'll ever do well in the sports arena is to get a seat near the concession stand.

BBB warns job hunters to steer clear of rebate processing job scams
2/4/2009
The Better Business Bureau is warning job hunters to beware of opportunities to work from home processing rebates. While the job offer may claim that people can earn up to a thousand dollars a day without leaving the comfort of their home, the BBB has received hundreds of complaints from victims nationwide who never earned a dime and were, in fact, ripped off for hundreds of dollars in upfront fees.

Social networking websites are a great way to find old classmates, stay connected with friends, or even make new friends. Recent rains may provide too much water for trees
1/20/2009
Recent rains left soils soggy across the state. The muddy puddles are doing more than making a mess. The stress the pools of water are placing on trees can cause serious problems down the road.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS - Between Madoff, the Banks and Chrysler it's clear: America coddles its crooks and con artists
1/13/2009
Say you shoplift. You get handcuffed and tossed into a nasty jail cell. It happens every day, just about everywhere.
Say you commit a really serious crime. It's likely your bond will be
set at a price too steep to afford. You'll sit in jail until your case
is heard.
But you're not the man who swindled billions of dollars from
unsuspecting investors. Not the man who apparently violated the order
that allowed him to live under "house arrest" in his luxury Manhattan
home, even after he "gifted" over $1 million in jewels to close friends.

Don't give Caroline Kennedy a 'bailout'
12/26/2008
We saw what happened when the mighty and powerful captains of Wall Street and the big banks asked for a giant blank check from Congress. What was promised to be a stimulus to our economy turned out to be a money grab in which the banks can't or won't tell us how they are using the money. They aren't making loans; they aren't assisting families or small businesses. They've turned out to be arrogant parasites.

Car czar would have nothing on Caesar
12/19/2008
Last week, as I read about the administration's intent to name a "car czar" to help salvage the Big Three automakers, visions of czar-plums danced in my head. A fancy government job involving cars! To quote an old beer commercial: "Hey guys, it doesn't get any better than this!"

A glimpse at a brighter future for the paranoid nation
12/19/2008
This week my new book went on sale on Amazon.com. In the coming weeks, I'm told, it will be in bookstores and airports across the nation. The book is called "Paranoid Nation: The Real Story of The 2008 Fight For The Presidency." I know, the title sounds ominous. I outline a slant on things that I haven't read or heard of anywhere else.

Holiday Q&A from the Georgia Fire Commissioner
12/12/2008
Q: What if someone breaks into my car and steals gifts while the car is parked at the mall? A: Standard homeowners and renter’s insurance policies provide coverage for this peril, subject to the policy deductible and coverage limits. Some automobile policies also provide coverage. If this happens to you, talk with your insurance agent or company to find out under which policy you should file your claim. To read more, click on link.

Simple questions can be complicated
12/12/2008
Dear TechnoFiles: These are probably pretty simple questions for you but I until recently I was a complete computer dummy but I’m now able to get on the Internet and actually do email! Every time I start my browser, Internet Explorer, it always starts with a Microsoft page. I really want to just start with Google, since that’s how I find everything. Another quick question: how do I take a picture of my grandkids on my computer and make it my background for my computer?

The debt we owe Laura Bush
12/12/2008
With so many newspapers columns about bailouts and debt, I thought I might just change the pace by paying tribute to a woman to whom we as Americans are indebted – First Lady Laura Bush. I know President Bush doesn't read columns, but with all due respect, he needs to read this one. So, I'm writing it to him.

Some of us are rotten eggs at science projects
12/12/2008
Back in high school, we had a science fair. I needed an idea, but, as has happened so many times before and after, my mind drew a blank. I was poorer than a college student and couldn't invest in exotic materials, so I looked around the house. I found eggs. We had chickens, so I figured they had already done most of the work for me. I built an incubator out of a cardboard box, coated inside with aluminum foil and warmed by a light bulb.
