Virginia Lett Rodgers

 

CHERAW - Mrs. Virginia Lett Rodgers, died Monday, September 06, 2010. Born in Patrick, SC she was a daughter of the late Duncan and Effie Linton Lett. She was the widow of Shade Rodgers. She and her husband were members of the First Baptist Church, Cheraw, SC. Mrs. Rodgers was a school teacher for many years.

 

Mrs. Rodgers is survived by several nephews and many loving friends.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents listed above; an infant child; and her brothers, William “Bill” Lett, Wade Lett and Robert “Bob” Lett.

 

A funeral service was held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. Burial was in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Cathie Lytton Camarda

 

Cathie Lytton Camarda of Spring Valley, California, died August 5, 2010, after a short battle with cancer. 

 

Cathie was born in Charleston, SC, in 1931 to Mary Francis Hayden Lytton and Joseph Wayles Lytton.  She was the granddaughter of the late Sarah Lane and Joseph Whitfield Lytton, long time residents of Cheraw. As a child, she lived between Cheraw and San Diego, California.  She had lifelong friends whom she cherished that live in Cheraw and proudly proclaimed herself a Cheraw native. 

 

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Tom Camarda; two daughters, Michele Camarda and Coleen Dill and husband James of Colorada; two grandchildren and one great grandchild; a brother and sister-in-law, Douglas and Terri Lytton of Encinitas, California.

 

She is preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Lane Lytton and his wife Patricia; an uncle, John Lane “Jack” Lytton; and an aunt, Sue Francis L. Blizzard. 

 

She loved and appreciated many years of close contact with her friends in Cheraw. [8/28]

James P. ‘Jimmy’ Dockray

 

Cheraw - Mr. James P. “Jimmy” Dockray, age 68, died Sunday, August 22, 2010, at his home.

 

A funeral service was held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, August 25, 2010, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel.

 

Mr. Dockray was born May 24, 1942, in Dexter, NM, a son of the late Kenneth and Josephine Monical Dockray. He was a graduate of Cloudcroft High School and a retired lineman with Progress Energy. Mr. Dockray was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War and was a member of the Church of Christ in Bennettsville, SC. Jimmy enjoyed woodworking, carpentry, fishing, and gardening.

 

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Shirley Raffaldt Dockray of the home; a son, Phillip B. (Malinda) Dockray of Ruby, SC; 3 Grandchildren, Cam Dockray, Samantha Hammonds, and Ashley (David) Treece; 1 Great Grandchild, Madison Williams; 1 Sister, Cheryl (Billy Wayne) Harrell of Farmington NM; Mother-in-law, Ruby Raffaldt of the home.

Robert E. Fisher

 

CHERAW, SC - Mr. Robert E. Fisher, age 85, died Saturday, August 21, 2010, at his home.

 

A private family service will be held at a later date.

 

Beloved and devoted family man, Robert Earl Fisher, went to join the Lord in Heaven on Saturday, August 21, 2010. He will be remembered always with joy and laughter by those he left behind. He was born on July 1, 1925 in Kent, OH, and served two years in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from Lawson’s Milk Company in 1987 after 42 years of service. After retirement, he relocated to Cheraw, SC, where he became a member of the Cheraw Country Club and spent many years enjoying golf, the game that he loved. As the patriarch of a large family, Bob will be most remembered for his ever-present love and guidance. His dedication to his family will continue to be an inspiration and example to all who loved him.

 

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Doris R. Fisher of the home; 2 Sons, Larry R. (Ruthann) Fisher of Washington State, and Randall L. (Susan) Fisher of Irmo, SC; 2 Daughters, Rebecca S. Fisher of Broken Arrow, OK, and Pamela F. Alvarez of Mt. Airy, NC; 1 Brother, William Henry Fisher of Ohio; also 9 Grandchildren and 9 Great-Grandchildren who will treasure the loving memories of their Papo/ Pa Bob.

Ann Stafford Powe

 

CHARLOTTE, NC - Our beloved Mother, Ann Powe, went to the Lord on Thursday August 26, 2010.

 

Mrs. Powe was born on July 5, 1930, in Burlington, a daughter of the late Melvin C. and Sadie Montgomery Stafford. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and had an extended study at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina. She also worked with the North Carolina Historical Society.

Mrs. Powe enjoyed reading and collecting antiques, but first and foremost she was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother.

 

In addition to her parents, her husband Dr. Harry L. Powe Jr. preceded her in death, to whom she was married 57 years and a sister Betsy Stafford Rosemond.

 

Surviving are her children, Harry L. Powe III of Charlotte, NC, Betsy Ann (Douglas) Tippens of Stanfield, NC; grandchildren Robert and Thomas Schmidt of Charlotte, NC, Alicia Powe-Hatley and Jason Hatley of Albemarle, NC and Michael Patrick Powe of Charlotte, NC. Also surviving are her two great grandchildren.

 

Mrs. Powe demonstrated a great loyalty to her friends and had a special caring for all those she knew and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

 

A funeral service was held Saturday, August 28, 2010, at 1:00 pm at Old St. David’s Episcopal Church with burial in Old St. David’s Cemetery.

Denise Harrison Spencer

 

POLKTON, N.C. – Mrs. Denise Harrison Spencer, 56, died Tuesday, August 24, 2010. at her home.

 

Funeral services were held at 3:00pm Saturday, August 28, 2010, at Oakdale Baptist Church with the Rev. Arnold Jackson officiating. Interment followed in Griffin Cemetery.

Denise was born December 18, 1953, in Mecklenburg County, NC, a daughter of the late Troy Edward and Irene Spencer Harrison. She had worked as a mail carrier with both Polkton and Peachland Post Offices and was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are her husband, Chuck Spencer of the home; her children, Troy B. Spencer of Charlotte, Michael L. Spencer of Matthews, Crystal McIntyre and husband Daniel of Ruby, SC, Shelia M. Spencer of Wadesboro, Tracy L. Spencer of Morven and Charlotte King and husband Jason of Cheraw, SC; her grandchildren, Jacob, Kaitlyn and Amy McIntyre, Chris and Zach Blackwell and Gracie King; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Billy and Michelle Spencer of Polkton; and her nephews, David Spencer of Great Falls, MT, and Jeremy Spencer of Polkton.

James Conley Eubanks

 

JEFFERSON - James Conley Eubanks, 86, died August 19, 2010.

 

A funeral service will be held Sunday, August 22, 2010, at Bethel Baptist Church at 3:00 P.M.

Interment will be in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be Saturday, August 21, 2010, at Bethel Baptist Church from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.

           

Mr. Eubanks is predeceased by his wife, Rosa M. Eubanks; son, Willie Eubanks; grandchildren, Scott Deese and Russell Eubanks.

Pete  Hurst

 

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. Pete  Hurst, age 73, surrounded by his Loving Family, went home to be with His Lord, Sunday, August 8, 2010.

 

A funeral service will be held at 4:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Oakland Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 10, 2010, at the Funeral Home.

 

Mr. Hurst was born July 21, 1937, in Chesterfield, SC, a son of the late Robert Wesley

and Pearline Therrell Hurst. He was a retired Millwright and a U. S. Army Veteran. Mr. Hurst was a faithful member of Southern Grace Full Gospel Church. Pete was an avid trader and outdoorsman. He enjoyed riding horses, raising livestock, cutting wood, camping, talking with his friends, and making new friends. In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by a son, John Wesley Hurst.

 

Survivors include his wife, Cindi C. Hurst of the home; a son, Mark W. Hurst of Chesterfield, SC; a daughter,  Lisa H. (Calvin) Gibson of Chesterfield, SC; two grandchildren, Haley and C. J. Gibson; a brother, Jack (Debbie) Hurst of Chesterfield, SC; a stepson, John E. Bosman of Marshville, NC; a stepdaughter, Teresa R. Bosman of Peoria, AZ; three step grandchildren, Nathan, Wyatt, and Breanna Bosman; and also several nieces and nephews.

Ruth Raines Tillman

 

CHERAW - Mrs. Ruth Raines Tillman, wife for 57 years of the late Daniel Lee Tillman Jr., died Saturday, August 7, 2010. She was born September 2, 1928, in Blythewood, SC, the daughter of Helen Stevens Raines and Tallie Durham Raines.


Mrs. Tillman graduated from Blythewood High School and Columbia College where she received a B.A. degree in English. Until her retirement in 1987, she taught for 31 years in the Hartsville, Bennettsville, and Cheraw Public Schools.


She was a member of Omicron Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an educational, honorary, and professional society. This society is to honor women who have given evidence of distinctive service in the field of education.


Mrs. Tillman was also a member of Old Cheraws DAR and a former member of Chesterfield County Hospital Board of Trustees, Pee Dee Area Girl Scouts Board of Trustees, and Cheraw Civic League Garden Club.


She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Cheraw where she served in many leadership capacities, including member of the Session and Board of Deacons. She served as President of Women of the Church and chairman of other church and Presbyterian Women Committees. She received an honorary Life Membership Award from the Presbyterian Women of the Church.


In 2005 she was given the Mary Dean Brewer Woman of Achievement Award for distinctive service in many areas by the Pee Dee Area Girl Scouts.
She is survived by two sons, Daniel Lee Tillman, III and William Raines “Bill” Tillman both of Cheraw; four grandsons, Daniel “Lee” Tillman, IV, Robert “Blake” Tillman, William Raines “Will” Tillman, Jr. and Benjamin Charles “Ben” Tillman; one granddaughter, Carolyn Marsch Tillman Crawford; and great granddaughter, Catherine Grace Crawford. Also, a very dear daughter-in-law, Charlene Harvey Tillman; three nephews, Richard Pazderski, Steve Pazderski, and Mac Pazderski survive. One sister, Sarah Raines Pazderski, predeceased her.


The service will be at First Presbyterian Church on Monday, August 9, 2010, at 3:00 o’clock with burial at Old St. David’s Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence, 108 Lake Drive, Cheraw on Sunday, August 8, 2010 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Ruby Davis Smith

 

CHERAW - Mrs. Ruby Davis Smith, age 79, died Friday, August 6, 2010, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law.

 

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM, Tuesday, August 10, 2010, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel, Chesterfield, SC. Interment will follow at Friendship United Methodist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield, SC.

 

Visitation will be from 2:00 – 3:00 PM Tuesday, prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

Mrs. Smith was born November 13, 1930, in Chesterfield, SC, a daughter of the late Nell Elizabeth Odom Davis Melton Hancock and Thomas Carl Davis. She was a homemaker and a member of Westside Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, Ruby was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Lee “Rex” Smith, and a brother, Gerald Davis.

 

Survivors include her loving daughter, Linda and son-in-law Herb Matthews of Columbia, SC; a brother, TC Davis of Bossier City, LA; a sister, Nancy Mangum of Pageland, SC; and also numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.

 

Mrs. Smith’s daughter would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Richard P. Murray of Internal Medicine Associates for his compassion and support. You held a special place in her heart.

Carnell Gainey O’Neal

 

HARTSVILLE - Funeral  services for Carnell Gainey O’Neal, age 89, who passed away Aug. 4, will be held Saturday at 2:00 pm at the Chapel Norton Funeral Home in Hartsville. The Rev. Ed Griggs will officiate. Burial will be in the Tabernacle Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. O’Neal was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Isaac and Minnie Stephens Gainey.

Johnny D. Bedford

 

SPARTANBURG - Johnny Dortch Bedford, 85, of Groce Road died Monday, July 19, 2010, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.  Born January 25, 1925, in Goldsboro, NC, he was the son of the late Wayland Dortch and Ella Howell Bedford and husband of the late Lena Brigman Bedford.  He was retired from Spector Freight Lines after forty years of service, a member of Teamster Local Union #28, and of the Methodist faith.  He was devoted to his Lord, his family, his job and his beloved Atlanta Braves.

 

Survivors include a daughter, Penny Bedford Wyatt and husband Jerry of the home; two sons, John Randall Bedford and wife Cathey of Cheraw, SC, and James Nathan Bedford; six grandchildren, John Walker Wyatt, Emily Ann Wyatt, James Dylan Bedford, and Nathan Kyle Bedford, all of Spartanburg, and Jonathan Brett Bedford and Laurie Katherine Bedford of Columbia; a daughter-in-law, Lisa Bedford; and a brother, Nathan Bedford of Logansville, GA.  He was predeceased by two sisters, Aliean Daughtry and Virginia Holzkamm, and three brothers, Leroy, Willie, and K.D. Bedford.

 

Funeral Services were held at 4:00 PM Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at the Chapel of Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Larry Fleming and the Rev. Robert M. Wofford.  Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Frances Deason ‘Tommie’ Edwards

 

CHERAW - Mrs. Frances Deason “Tommie” Edwards, age 64, died Wednesday, July 21, 2010.

 

A funeral service was held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, July 24, 2010, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Edwards was born September 8, 1945, in Maxton, NC, a daughter of the late Harvey Reece and Ethel Frances Horne Deason. She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, Tommie was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Lindsey Edwards; one son, Winston Scott Edwards; one daughter, Lindsey Nicole Edwards; and by two brothers, Hank and Wayne Deason.

 

Survivors include a son: Bryan (Amy) Edwards of Cheraw, SC; two daughters: Wendy E. (Ron) Hogan of Statesville, NC, and Brandy (Mark Holley) Edwards of Pageland, SC; three grandchildren: Scott Kissiah, Stormy Edwards, and K’la Holley; six brothers: John, Gene, Earl, and Charles Deason of Pageland, SC, Ronnie Deason of Mt. Frederick W. ‘Fred’ Gaskins

 

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. Frederick W. “Fred” Gaskins, age 78, died Wednesday, July 28, 2010.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 PM, Friday, July 30, 2010, at Chesterfield Baptist Church.  

Interment with military honors followed at Chesterfield Cemetery.

 

Mr. Gaskins was born August 28, 1931, in Chesterfield, SC, a son of the late Woodrow Wilson “Red” and Lillian Tucker Gaskins. He attended Chesterfield High School and received his high school diploma from Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS. Mr. Gaskins served two years in the S.C. National Guard and was an U.S. Air Force Veteran of the Korean War, where he was the Wing Lead Radio Operator and flew on 32 bombing missions. He retired as U.S. Postmaster with the Chesterfield Post Office with 25 years of service. Mr. Gaskins was a member of Chesterfield Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Choir, Fellowship Sunday School Class, and the Brotherhood. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion Post 74, and a charter member of Green River Country Club. Mr. Gaskins’ hobbies included training bird dogs, bird hunting, playing golf, farming, and raising cattle. He was a recipient of the SC Puppy of the Year award, and a three-time recipient of the SC Shooting Dog of the Year award. He also enjoyed camping, riding his golf cart, and his time working as a meatcutter. In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by a grandson, James Thomas “Tommy” White; two brothers, Jerry G. and Glenn Wiley Gaskins; and by a sister, Caronell Gaskins Caldwell.

 

Survivors include his wife of 56 years: Lucille Elvera Rinquist Gaskins of the home; two sons: Freddy (Teresa) Gaskins and Mark (Francie) Gaskins, both of Chesterfield, SC; two daughters: Cammie Lou (Jamie) McLain and Libby Gaskins, both of Chesterfield, SC; six grandchildren: Trey and Brittany Gaskins, Candace and Rebecca White, Madyson and Connor Scott; a brother: Donnie (Geraldine) Gaskins of Chesterfield, SC; a sister-in-law: Iona Gaskins of Chesterfield, SC; and a brother-in-law: Norman Caldwell of Pageland, SC.

 Jimmy Lewis Laney

PAGELAND - Mr. Jimmy Lewis Laney, 72, entered into God’s presence on Wednesday, July 28, 2010.  He was born April 30, 1938, a son of the late Robert and Thelma Sanders Laney.

 

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Sarah Phillips and Thelma Steele; and a brother, Carl Millon Laney.

 

Mr. Laney is survived by his loving wife, Doris D. Laney and step-children Jan (Johnny) Hayes, Tim (Donna) Hicks and Patti (Dean) Thomas of Pageland, SC; Rick (Barbara) Pigg of Monroe, NC, Anne Pigg of Cornelius, NC, and Charles (Patty) Pigg of Sunset, SC; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.  He is also survived by sisters Bobbie Hayes of Chapin, SC, Peggy (Jim) Cranfield of Kannapolis, NC; and brother Dennis Laney of Pageland, SC.

 

Mr. Laney was an active member of Zion United Methodist Church, where he served on several committees.  Mr. Laney was past owner of Laney Grocery and a retired Farm Bureau agent.  He continued to be active in his community assisting those less fortunate.  He was a member of the Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge # 58.

 

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2010, at Zion United Methodist Church, Pageland, SC.  Interment will follow at the Laney Family Cemetery, Pageland, SC.  The family will receive friends at the church on Friday, July 30, 2010 from 6 – 8 p.m.

Gerald Franklin “Bo” Williamson Jr.

Gerald Franklin “Bo” Williamson Jr., 42, died Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at home following a lengthy illness. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM, Friday, July 30, 2010, at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. A funeral service will follow at 5:00 PM in the funeral home chapel. Johnny D. Bedford

 

SPARTANBURG - Johnny Dortch Bedford, 85, of Groce Road died Monday, July 19, 2010, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.  Born January 25, 1925, in Goldsboro, NC, he was the son of the late Wayland Dortch and Ella Howell Bedford and husband of the late Lena Brigman Bedford.  He was retired from Spector Freight Lines after forty years of service, a member of Teamster Local Union #28, and of the Methodist faith.  He was devoted to his Lord, his family, his job and his beloved Atlanta Braves.

 

Survivors include a daughter, Penny Bedford Wyatt and husband Jerry of the home; two sons, John Randall Bedford and wife Cathey of Cheraw, SC, and James Nathan Bedford; six grandchildren, John Walker Wyatt, Emily Ann Wyatt, James Dylan Bedford, and Nathan Kyle Bedford, all of Spartanburg, and Jonathan Brett Bedford and Laurie Katherine Bedford of Columbia; a daughter-in-law, Lisa Bedford; and a brother, Nathan Bedford of Logansville, GA.  He was predeceased by two sisters, Aliean Daughtry and Virginia Holzkamm, and three brothers, Leroy, Willie, and K.D. Bedford.

 

Funeral Services were held at 4:00 PM Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at the Chapel of Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Larry Fleming and the Rev. Robert M. Wofford.  Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303; or to Mobile Meals Service, P.O. Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304.

CHERAW - Mrs. Frances Deason “Tommie” Edwards, age 64, died Wednesday, July 21, 2010.

 

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, July 24, 2010, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation is 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Friday, July 23, 2010, at the funeral home.

 

Mrs. Edwards was born September 8, 1945, in Maxton, NC, a daughter of the late Harvey Reece and Ethel Frances Horne Deason. She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, Tommie was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Lindsey Edwards; one son, Winston Scott Edwards; one daughter, Lindsey Nicole Edwards; and by two brothers, Hank and Wayne Deason.

 

Survivors include a son: Bryan (Amy) Edwards of Cheraw, SC; two daughters: Wendy E. (Ron) Hogan of Statesville, NC, and Brandy (Mark Holley) Edwards of Pageland, SC; three grandchildren: Scott Kissiah, Stormy Edwards, and K’la Holley; six brothers: John, Gene, Earl, and Charles Deason of Pageland, SC, Ronnie Deason of Mt. Ronnie Calvin Jordan

RUBY - Mr. Ronnie Calvin Jordan, age 66, died Tuesday, July 13, 2010.

 

A funeral service was held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 16, 2010, at Thompson Creek Baptist Church. Interment followed in the Church Cemetery.

 

Mr. Jordan was born October 29, 1943, in Chesterfield, SC, a son of the late William James “Jim” and Minnie Alberta Hurst Jordan. He was a former employee of the Town of Chesterfield and Carolina Restaurant. In addition to his parents, Ronnie was preceded in death by a brother, William Carson Jordan.

 

Survivors include his wife, Lois Ann Boatwright Jordan of the home; two brothers, James A. (Von) Jordan of Ruby, SC, and James C. “Jimmy” (Judith) Jordan, Jr. of Patrick, SC; two sisters, Patsy (Dalton) Ratliff of Ruby, SC and Betty (Joe) Catoe of Lancaster, SC; a sister-in-law, Doris L. Jordan of Ruby, SC; three aunts, Estelle Jordan of Kannapolis, NC, Dorothy Therrell of Fort Mill, SC, and Novella Smith of Ruby, SC; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Virginia Emory Leppard

 

CHESTERFIELD - Mrs. Virginia Emory Leppard, age 79, died Wednesday, July 7, 2010, at her home.

 

A celebration of life funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 10, 2010, at Chesterfield Baptist Church. A private family committal service will be held at Chesterfield Cemetery.

 

Visitation will follow the service at the Leppard Home, 406 E. Main Street, Chesterfield, SC.

 

Mrs. Leppard was born on July 13, 1930, in Spartanburg, SC, to the late Edna Bryson Emory Powell and Guy Edward Emory of Spartanburg, SC. She was also the step daughter of the late George Dewey Powell of Tampa, FL. Mrs. Leppard graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1947 and attended the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Leppard was a member of the Garden and Civic Clubs of Chesterfield. She also served as secretary and treasurer of the Chesterfield Youth Center, which was instrumental in providing a swimming pool for the town of Chesterfield. Virginia served as grade mother for many years for her children and was den mother for the Boy Scouts of America. She was a member of the Tuesday and Thursday night bridge clubs for over 50 years and was a member of the Bridge Couples club. Mrs. Leppard was an active member of Chesterfield Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and served on many committees at the church for over 60 years.

She was married to the late Edward McIver Leppard, who served Chesterfield County for many years in the House of Representatives and the Senate. Mrs. Leppard was very active in her late husband’s political career, and stood loyally by her husband, as he served the people of Chesterfield County as senior partner of Leppard and Leppard Attorneys at Law.

 

Survivors are Daughter: Virginia Adair Watson and husband Richard Watson of Isle of Palms, SC; Son: Edward McIver Leppard M.D. and wife Constance of Columbia, SC; Daughter: Sarah Jane Henderson and husband Judge Roger Henderson of Chesterfield, SC, and Daughter: Patricia Bryson Adams and husband Larry Adams of Chesterfield, SC; nine Grandchildren: Robert, Richard, and John Watson,  McIver Leppard M.D, Cameron Leppard, Emory Campbell, Charlotte Watson, Edward Henderson, and her special granddaughter, Julia Adams; also three Great Grandchildren; Brother: James Wallace Emory and wife Johnnie Sue of Hampton, Va.

She had many great caregivers for many years and a very special caregiver, Janice Louise White who provided her care 24/7.

She is also survived by her special dog, “Butter Bean.”

 

She was known affectionately to her grandchildren, and many in the community as Mama “G.”

Donald L. Outlaw

 

WALLACE - Donald L. Outlaw, 47, died Sunday, July 4, 2010. Born in Cheraw, SC, he was a son of the late Junior and Margaret Hewitt Outlaw. He was a graduate of Wallace High School and was a computer analyst.

 

Surviving are his brothers, Ronnie (Joyce) Outlaw of Chesterfield and Berri Outlaw of Wallace; nieces and nephews, Leif (Kim) Outlaw, Kim Outlaw, Maggie Outlaw and Mallory Outlaw; and several aunts and uncles.

MT. CROGHAN - Mrs. Jean Deese Jenkins, age 53, died Saturday, July 3, 2010.

A funeral service was held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, July 5, 2010, at Fairview Baptist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

 

Mrs. Jenkins was born October 16, 1956, in Chesterfield, SC, a daughter of Martha Lee Brock Deese and the late Billy James Deese. She was a graduate of Chesterfield High School Class of 1974. Jean was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church. In addition to her father, Jean was preceded in death by her husband, David Robert Jenkins.

 

Survivors include three daughters, Deronda Jenkins of Ruby, SC, Danielle (Chris Donahue) Jenkins of Mt. Croghan, SC, and Shannon Jenkins of the home; two stepsons, David R. “Robbie” (Hope Foster) Jenkins, Jr. and Christopher Lee “Chris” Jenkins, both of Mt. Croghan, SC; a stepdaughter, Lisa Jenkins of Jefferson, SC; her mother: Martha Deese of Ruby, SC; two brothers, Larry Deese of Mt. Croghan, SC, and Tony Deese of Ruby, SC; also 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

CHERAW - V. Kenneth Eddins, 74, died Friday, July 2, 2010. Born in Cason Old Field, NC, he was a son of the late Vernon and Ella Katherine Sellers Eddins. He was retired from Delta Mills. Mr. Eddins was a retired US Army Veteran (30 years). He was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC.

 

Surviving are his wife, Cassie Rose Efird Eddins of Cheraw, SC; daughters, Carla Leigh (Jody) Reid of Cheraw, SC, and Kenny Lynn (Randy) Foster of Lexington, NC; grandchildren, Joseph Edward Reid, William Randall Foster, Jr., Molly Lynn Foster and Quintin Graham Foster; brothers, Ben (Terry) Eddins of Norwood, NC, and Joe (Sadie) Eddins of Hartsville, SC; and a sister-in-law, Beth Eddins of Morven, NC.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents listed above; brothers, Andy H. Eddins and Ralph Eddins; and a grandson, Joseph Frederick Reid, IV.

 

A funeral service was held at 3:00 PM, Monday July 5, 2010, at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC. Burial with military honors followed in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Mary Ann Moye

 

CHERAW - Mary Ann Moye, 69, died June 27, 2010. Born in Graham, Texas, she was a daughter of the late Matthew and Mary Belle Slaughter Roberts. She was a member of United Fellowship Church of God. Mary Ann loved to write poetry and was a loving grandmother.

 

Surviving are a daughter, Audrey (Jim) Robertson of Wallace, SC; brothers, Floyd Roberts of Breckinridge, TX, James Roberts of College Station, TX, and David Roberts of Graham, TX; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Hobbs of Euless, TX; grandchildren, Jason (Jo Anna) Robertson, Justin (Kimberly) Robertson, Desiree (Aaron) Tolson, Ricky (Melanie) Kurtz, Jessica (Steve) Thornton, Cammie (Rich) Rader, Mandy Hobbs, Jeremy (Tressie) Hobbs; and 13 great-grandchildren.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents listed above and two sons, Jackie Hobbs and Darrell Hobbs.

 

A memorial service was held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 5, 2010, at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. Inurnment will be in Old St. David’s Cemetery, Cheraw, SC.

John ‘Johnny’ Wilson Sowell Jr.

 

JEFFERSON - John “Johnny” Wilson Sowell Jr. died June 30, 2010.

 

A funeral service will be held Friday, July 2, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Pageland United Methodist Church with interment in Rose Hill Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be Thursday, July 1, 2010, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Sutton-Baumgartner Funeral Home.       

 

A son of the late John W. (Sr.) and Dorothy Foley Sowell, Mr. Sowell served in the Pageland Police Department for 32 years and as Police Chief since October 1992.  He was a member of the Pageland United Methodist Church and a member of the Shriners and the Masonic Lodge in Pageland.  He also served as Treasurer for the Rescue Squad in Pageland for many years.  He served on the Board of Disabilities for Chesterfield County.  Mr. Sowell was also an avid Antique Car Collector.

 

Survivors include his wife, Joan Sowell of Jefferson, SC; stepson, Alan Baker of Pageland, SC; stepdaughter, Nina (Justin) Dean of Pageland, SC; sister, Libby (Donny) Benton of Pageland, SC; grandson, Jarius Dean of Pageland, SC; granddaughter, Jadee Dean of Pageland, SC; niece Beth Benton of Pageland, SC; and nephew, Clay Benton of Matthews, NC.

SUMTER - Miss Amelia Hough, age 66, formerly of Chesterfield, SC, died Monday, June 28, 2010.

 

A funeral service was held at 3:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at Chesterfield Baptist Church. Interment followed in the Chesterfield Cemetery.

 

Miss Hough was born August 27, 1943, in Wadesboro, NC, a daughter of the late William Augustus and Kathryn Matthews Hough. She was a graduate of Chesterfield High School Class of 1961 and Winthrop College. Amelia was a retired school teacher with Millwood Elementary School. She was a member of Chesterfield Baptist Church. Amelia enjoyed spending time at Sunset Beach and was an avid photographer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Minor J. Hough.

 

Survivors include a brother, William E. “Bill” Hough and wife Brenda of Chesterfield, SC; three nephews, Emmet (Lawson) Hough of Columbia, SC, Austin (Beth) Hough and Jim Hough of Chesterfield, SC; great nieces and nephews, Jenna, Ethan, William and Katherine Hough; and also special friends and co-workers.

CHERAW - Mr. Franklin D. “Buck” Starling, age 69, died Saturday, June 26, 2010, at his home.

 

A funeral service was held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel, Chesterfield, SC. Interment followed in the Lower Macedonia Memorial Gardens.

 

Mr. Starling was born October 24, 1940, in Chesterfield, SC, a son of the late John and Cora Lee Parker Starling. He was a retired electrician with Delta Mills and an avid fisherman. In addition to his parents, “Buck” was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Lynn Atkinson; four brothers, Woodrow, Wesley, Gene and Douglas Starling; and by three sisters, Reatha Dixon, Lucy Mae Lambirth and Martha Mabe.

 

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Brenda Joyce Haithcock Starling of the home; two sons, Frankie (Susan) McMasters and Daniel F. “Buddy” Starling of Asheboro, NC; a daughter, Kaye Hickey and Timothy Wallace of Cheraw, SC; two sisters, Margie (David) Sweatt of Chesterfield, SC, and Nellie Parker of Asheboro, NC; also five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
